Mother Nature's pissed

Kate wrote about this in her livejournal a little while ago, and it made me think (though it had occured to me before). With all these crazy natural disasters happening all over the world, which seem ever increasing in violence and strength, how are the international aid organizations expected to cope? While they're still dealing with the southern US, there are mud slides and earthquakes. Supplies and personelle are running thin. Not only that, its hard to get into some of these places because of weather or other environmental factors that prevent the aid from getting to the people who need it. So on top of the struggle these people are going through to find their families and rebuild their homes, they have to worry about having enough food to survive, and the whole situation becomes a humanitarian crisis as well.

So far, Canada has been lucky. We haven't had a major event happen within our borders. My questions to you: do you think its only a matter of time before we're hit (either with a natural disaster or otherwise)? Are we giving enough to the people who need our help? Who will help us if we're struck with some sort of disaster?

If we did have a huge natural disaster in Canada I think we would be pretty much on our own in terms of relief. Even if we did send more aid to the US for hurricane victims, which I'm not saying we should since the US is the richest country and have the resources themselves but are choosing to put all their efforts into Iraq and other invasions rather than helping people in their own country, the US would still not help us if we needed it. From the way they responded to other situations like SARS and the ONE case of mad cow that was found in Canada; they even blamed Canada for letting terrorists in after Sept 11, 2001; I have no confidence that they would support us or send any kind of relief should a disaster hit Canada. Maybe other countries in the UK would send help, though.

i completely agree with that comment. It's amazingly ironic/hypocritical that the richest country in the world is going around with its hat out collecting donations from around the world, rather than funding the relief out of their own pockets. THAT is the greatest humanitarian crisis: total apathy towards your fellow man in the United States. Hurricanes come and go, and people always bounce back (Florida is the PERFECT example, look at how many hurricanes and tropical storms they've survived). I have yet to donate a penny, and I won't because it fails to address the larger problem of social/racial inequality and indifference in the US. The people that were displaced by Katrina will get by; we (as a species) always do.

Granted, New Orleans (and the entire state of Louisiana for that matter) was a rather extreme case, but I honestly don't feel any sympathy for the consequences of that hurricane, not because I lack compassion, but because everybody knew that storm was gonna be big, that New Orleans' levees were going to be overrun and that everyone should have evacuated. I remember being on break at work and flipping between both CNN and FOX news (not by choice) and they had ROUND-THE-CLOCK coverage on Katrina's progress. Everybody knew it was coming, and they all knew it was gonna wreak havoc (assuming anybody was paying attention). They had 4 days before that storm hit land, and the United States Government sat on their hands and did fuck all. If it was canada, we would have had the army sent in to assist in the evacuation, helicopters (assuming they could fly) airlifting people out of the downtown core and to safety. The states (and especially george bush) couldnt be bothered, it was labour day! Of course, why would they give a shit when the only people that were unable to evacuate were poor black people (kinda like two birds with one stone, know what i mean).
